What is the Elo rating system?
The Elo scoring system, central to obtaining titles from the International Chess Federation (FIDE), is a mathematical method, based on statistical calculation, to calculate the relative skill of the players of disciplines such as chess. The Elo score of a chess player is represented by a number based on his performance in previously played games and based on that it estimates the probable result of the confrontation between one player and another. For example, a player with an Elo score 100 points higher than his opponent is expected to win about five games out of a total of eight against that opponent (64%). While a chess player with a 200 Elo point advantage over his rival should win three games out of four (75%). Under this logic, the lower the probability of a victory, the greater the number of points a player receives when winning and, conversely, the player who is defeated will lose more points than usual.
