Time.news – It’s called Scooter and is the ‘ugliest dog in the world’, rewarded not only for his ugliness, but also for his courage and resilience. Scooter, a Chinese crested dog, in fact risked euthanasia because he was born deformed; but now he has stood on the highest podium, with flying colours, of bizarre contestwhich has been held for 50 years, with unchanged success, at the Sonoma-Marin show in Petaluma, California.
Born with paws pointing backwards, Scooter was in a litter of puppies when he saw the light of day seven years ago, in Tucson, Arizona: considering its deformities, the breeder had decided to bring it to slaughter because he was certain that he would never walko.
But the Saving Animals From Euthanasia group decided to give it a chance and they were right. Because Scooter, who also stubbornly hangs out his tongue, has learned to use his front paws to move around; and he uses the rear ones to lean on, like a tripod, when he wants to rest.

A group of volunteers has also financed the purchase of a trolley with wheels which helps him to move; And now, thanks to therapy and a special cart, Scooter is able to walk and “has no idea he’s different from other dogs,” reads his biography.

Its owner, Linda Elmquist, is “very happy and incredibly proud”: “Scooter – she said – defied all adversity and showed us the true meaning of resilience and determination”.
