The Ukrainian army went on the offensive against the Russian forces

The spokeswoman for the southern command of the Ukrainian army, Natalya Homniuk, announced today (Monday) that the Ukrainian army launched an attack against the Russian army. The forces are advancing towards the city of Kherson with the aim of expelling the Russian forces and returning the occupied districts to Ukrainian sovereignty: “We started the attack from several directions, the residents are called to evacuate the battle zones,” she said.

On the other hand, there have been reports that the Russian army is increasing its attacks in the Donbas region, apparently in an attempt to force the Ukrainian army to increase its forces in the east and thus reduce the possibility that the Ukrainian army will have a large enough force to launch an extensive operation in the south.

“This is an operation for which the Ukrainian army has been preparing for several months,” Homaniuk said. According to her, the recent attacks on logistics routes in the south “undoubtedly weakened the enemy”, when only last week more than ten weapons and ammunition depots of the Russian forces were destroyed. It was also reported that Ukraine operates organizations in the south of the country that carry out sabotage operations against Russian officials and collaborators who give in to their demands.

The city of Kherson was the first district occupied by the Russian forces. In this sense, the city became a symbol. Now, after the forces of the Ukrainian army have demonstrated resilience and determination against the Russian army, the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has decided to send his troops to the operation aimed at recapturing the territories.

As of today, Russia has annexed large parts of southern Ukraine to its territory, mainly in the region of the cities of Zaporizhia and Kherson. In addition, the Russians occupied territories in the Donbas region in the east of the country, but for the time being they do not have enough forces and resources to advance further and occupy the Donetsk region. Even in the battles taking place in the north of the country, in the area of the city of Kharkiv, no significant achievements were recorded for Russia.

At the same time as the fighting, Russian President Vladimir Putin is working to establish Russian sovereignty in the occupied territories and has begun to introduce the laws of the Russian Federation, such as the use of the Russian ruble and the replacement of license plates on vehicles. In order to gain legitimacy for his actions, Putin plans to hold referendums of questionable credibility regarding the annexation of the occupied territories.

The reports of the Ukrainian attack come against the background of the announcement by the Secretary General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Raphael Grossi, who expressed his fear of a nuclear disaster as a result of the bombings of the parties in areas near the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. Grossi said that a team from the agency was sent to the reactor.
