Security precautions are already being taken by the Berlin police: In mid-May, the Ukrainian President Selenskyj is to visit the capital as a guest of Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Because the information became known so early, the Ukrainian government is now apparently hesitating.

The Ukrainian government is apparently considering canceling President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s planned visit to Berlin. The government in Kiev is very upset that relevant information has already become known and is considering canceling Zelensky’s visit, reports “t-online.de”, citing pro-government sources in Ukraine [t-online.de].

According to the Wednesday report, the group was “very disappointed” that “apparently very sensitive security policy information had been published deliberately from German sources”. This process was “irresponsible” and could “put into question a possible visit by the Ukrainian president”.

Weekend of the planned visit already mentioned in reports

It had previously become known that Volodymyr Zelenskyj was to visit Berlin in mid-May. As the Berlin police confirmed to rbb on Wednesday, appropriate preparations are being made in the city. A police spokesman for the DPA said he wanted to come to the capital the weekend after next at the invitation of Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD).

The weekend includes Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th May. According to the police, there is no specific information about the date so far in advance. The “BZ” had first reported on the planned visit. The Chancellery initially did not confirm Zelensky’s visit to Berlin. According to “BZ”, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also invited the Ukrainian President.

First visit of the Ukrainian president since the beginning of the war

Selenskyj is to receive the Charlemagne Prize in Aachen on May 14th. The organizers had already announced that they were preparing for Zelenskyj’s personal participation, but that this was still open. The Charlemagne Prize of the City of Aachen has been awarded since 1950 to personalities who have made a contribution to the unity of Europe.

For security reasons, the President rarely leaves his country. He has not been to Germany since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression. He last visited the Federal Republic in July 2021 to meet the then Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU).
