I held important negotiations in Baku and am pleased to give a lecture to ADA students. We are preparing a new, next climate conference – COP29 in Baku. I once again congratulate the government and citizens of Azerbaijan on this event. This is a great responsibility. There is hard work ahead. But Azerbaijan will cope with this, as it has extensive experience in hosting the most important world events.

As Day.Az reports with reference to Trend, the Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Simon Steele said this at a lecture at the ADA University in Baku.

He said that “the Olympic motto ‘faster, higher, stronger’ should become our common climate mantra.”

“While last year’s agreement at COP28 was far from ideal and would have been unthinkable just a few years ago, it is a very strong signal that global decarbonization is inevitable,” he said.

An Olympic effort will be needed over the next two years to meet the UN’s 2030 and 2050 climate targets, he said.

“The governments of the world at one time consciously acceded to the Paris Climate Agreement. I think that it is pragmatic and achievable to achieve a 43 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and this was mentioned at COP28.

I see a global energy system with zero greenhouse gas emissions. For 25 years, the UN has been trying to change the approach to environmental protection through necessary measures in the industrial sector and agriculture. After all, the health of all people on Earth depends on this,” said the Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC.

He added that decarbonization is now an important part of the transformation of the world’s economies.

“The UN will be presenting a major study in 2025 on progress made in implementing the Paris Climate Agreement, and it is important for us to step up our efforts,” Steele added.
