“It must be admitted: the Organization is at a standstill regarding aggression. Humanity no longer puts its hopes in the UN when it comes to protecting the sovereign borders of nations… But it is not only Russian aggression against Ukraine. The terrorist state aims to undermine with its aggression all the dams of international norms that should protect peace from wars. And I am grateful to everyone in the world who recognized Russia’s aggression as a violation of the UN Charter,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his speech at the UN Security Council meeting.

According to him, Moscow occupies a seat in the Security Council illegally and, thanks to this privilege, receives the right of veto over all decisions of the organization. “It is the 574th day of the war in Ukraine,” said Zelensky. — These are 574 reasons to change something in the organization.”

He believes that the organization needs reform. According to him, the Security Council needs expansion, and countries should have the right to override the veto of existing permanent members. He suggested the African Union, Japan, Germany and India as potential new permanent friends.

He believes that it is generally understood what exactly makes the UN ineffective: “The veto in the hands of the aggressor is what drove the UN into a dead end.”

Zelensky stated the need to withdraw Russian troops from the territory of Ukraine to the borders of 1991: “Only the fulfillment of these conditions will ensure a ceasefire.”

Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov spoke later for Zelensky, who had already left the Security Council meeting hall, and commented on it as follows:

“When we hear calls to return Ukraine to the borders of 1991, the question arises whether these people are familiar with Kiev’s plans in relation to the population of the mentioned territories? There are calls for the physical destruction of these people.”

Lavrov also stated that Russia does not give up negotiations on Ukraine – they say, “if the USA wanted, they could order Zelensky to cancel the decree banning dialogue with Moscow.”

The permanent representative of Russia in the organization, Vladimir Nebenzia, was against Zelensky’s speech, but Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, who is presiding over the meeting, said in response that if Moscow does not want Zelensky to speak at the Security Council meetings, it should stop the war.
