Resolving the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza will be a key focus of the UN’s peace and security work in 2024. This was stated by the Secretary General of the world organization, Antonio Guterres, at a press conference on the priorities of the UN in 2024, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

“In the area of peace and security, I believe it is critically important to find a solution to two “burning conflicts” that are associated with profound consequences for the whole world: Ukraine and Gaza,” he said.

Guterres added that in order to resolve the Ukrainian conflict, he considers it important to work towards achieving a just and lasting peace in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

“As for Gaza, the situation is only getting worse. In addition to the death and destruction caused by military operations, hunger and disease are hitting the Palestinians in Gaza. <...> An immediate ceasefire is necessary. The immediate and unconditional release of all hostages is necessary. It is necessary to take real, tangible and concrete steps towards a two-state solution based on UN resolutions, international law and previous agreements,” said the head of the world body.

Guterres stressed that UN humanitarian convoys continue to be denied access to the Palestinian enclave, and staff of the world organization work there at risk to their lives.

He previously expressed concern about Israel’s plans to expand military operations in the Gaza Strip and to the border Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have taken refuge. According to him, this could lead to a worsening of the humanitarian situation in the enclave.
