The head of the program United Nations Environmentsaid yesterday that he has begun to see convergence around the first treaty global binding about the plastic pollutiondespite the fact that differences persist regarding production.
Inger Andersen, executive director of the Environment Program of the UN, said his team is “preparing” for the final round of negotiations in November in Busan, South Korea.
It is expected that the countries there will be able to seal a potentially innovative agreement to address the huge problem of global plastic pollution.
“There are certain areas where I think we are starting to see convergence,” Andersen said from New York. Andersen said she was hopeful that member states could agree on “some degree of global obligations or guidelines for plastic products.”
He assured that there is a growing convergence around the need for there to be a scientific organization and a “text that deals with plastics”.
