MADRID, 31 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United Nations Security Council has this Monday extended the mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) for one more year and has asked Morocco, the Polisario Front, Algeria and Mauritania to resume negotiations to reach a “final and mutually acceptable” solution.

The resolution, which was adopted with 13 votes in favor and two abstentions (Russia and Mozambique), expresses its support for the UN and urges the countries of the region to collaborate “productively” with MINURSO.

According to a statement, the document also requests respect for the ceasefire and abstention from taking actions that could undermine the negotiations or destabilize the situation; It should be remembered that last Sunday at least one person died and three others were injured by four explosions that occurred in the city of Smara, in Western Sahara.

The Polisario, for its part, has welcomed the Security Council resolution to guarantee the “self-determination of the Sahrawi people”, and has demanded concrete measures to allow it.

“The Security Council has missed another opportunity to adopt concrete measures that will allow MINURSO to fully fulfill its mandate, defined in Security Council resolution 690 (1991),” Polisario said, as published by the Saharawi news agency. SPS.

Furthermore, he criticized the “continued silence” of the Council and some of its members regarding “the serious consequences of the violation and subversion of the 1991 ceasefire by the Moroccan occupying State.”

Morocco has also celebrated the resolution and has taken the opportunity to recall “the growing international support” for the autonomy plan for Western Sahara, according to the Moroccan News Agency MAP.
