The melting of ice in the permafrost zone, which occurs due to climate change, can lead to the awakening of dangerous viruses, the UN Secretary General’s Advisor on Climate Change said at the NAUKA 0+ All-Russian Science Festival. Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Rae Kwon Chung, TASS reports.

“We can expect the emergence of new viruses that will appear as a result of ice melting in Siberia and Canada, that is, the permafrost zone. We do not know which viruses will “wake up” as a result of the melting ice, “Chung said.

Permafrost is an area where ice does not melt when seasons change. It covers the territory of the Arctic and Antarctic, including the Arctic Ocean, northern America, Europe and Asia.

He called for a joint effort to curb global warming. To do this, countries must introduce the principles of a “climate” economy, in which they would be charged for carbon emissions.
