The UN’s commitment to Azerbaijan could double gas exports to Europe as it prepares to host the next Climate Summit in 2024″>COP29 is to support Azerbaijan in this important process, the results of which will be long-lasting.

As Day.Az reported on Friday with reference to Trend, UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Vladanka Andreeva said this at a joint event between the UN and Pasha Holding on the topic “Dialogues on climate: the road to COP29” in Baku.

According to her, UN experts will make every effort to ensure that the COP29 conference is successful and its participants understand the “climate mission.”

Andreeva also mentioned that global warming has reached 1.5 degrees, and this is a very pressing issue – to fulfill obligations to descendants and remain within this temperature, trying to prevent further global warming.

“We must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent,” Andreeeva emphasized.

She noted that COP30 will be held in Brazil, and what is decided at COP29 in Baku will affect subsequent climate conferences, as this is an ongoing process.

“COP29 will provide an opportunity to take action to implement a number of actions in the field of climate change. We are developing appropriate models and strategies,” Andreeva added.

It should be noted that the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in Azerbaijan this November. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Within two weeks, Baku, having become the center of the world, will receive about 70-80 thousand foreign guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The abbreviation COP (Conference of Parties) stands for Conference of the Parties, which is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

There are 198 countries that are parties to the convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
