REPORTAGE – Since the earthquake last February, Syrian refugees have become the scapegoats for many Turkish victims. They are accused of looting the homes, even the bodies of the victims of the earthquake.

On an isolated wasteland amid the rubble, a dozen tents are swept away by a wind laden with yellow dust. There is almost nothing left of this district of Antakya, the ancient Antioch, very hard hit by the earthquake of February 6th. Between the buildings razed by the diggers, around fifty Syrian refugees, including three pregnant women, have survived here since the earthquake, in great destitution.
“We are asking the authorities to install electricity and running water for us, but we have had no response.laments Gazi, a 32-year-old Syrian. Usually no one brings us food. When an association brings some, it is often too little for the whole camp. We don’t eat when we’re hungry.” The tents in which they are sheltering were donated by the Foundation for Human Rights, Freedoms and Humanitarian Aid (IHH), an NGO close to Turkish political Islam, and by Afad, the Turkish agency in charge of natural disasters…
