The union rally near the Stade de France on Saturday evening to protest against the pension reform on the occasion of the final of the Coupe de France, which Emmanuel Macron will attend, was banned by the Paris police headquarters, while an important safety device has been provided.

The Paris police headquarters has banned the rally planned by unions near the Stade de France on Saturday evening April 29 for the final of the Coupe de France football event, which will be attended by President Emmanuel Macron.

A police source explained this ban for several reasons: non-compliance with the deadlines for declaring a gathering (three clear days), possible disruption of a sporting event with the announcement on social networks of the distribution of whistles (whistle being prohibited in sports arenas so as not to disturb the refereeing) and wish to avoid any politicization of a sporting event.

The Seine-Saint-Denis inter-union protested, judging this “decision as ridiculous as it is serious”, in a press release released Friday evening.

“Ridiculous to think that we will be able to prohibit, by authoritarian and tinkered measures, the democratic expression of the protest against the pension reform”, adds the group of unions, having planned the distribution of red cards and whistles, Saturday evening, to spectators at the exit of the metro and RER.

“We are not organizing a demonstration, we are only doing towing,” CGT departmental secretary Kamel Brahmi told AFP at the initiative of the banned mobilization.

The Seine-Saint-Denis inter-union had decided on this action to protest against the adoption of the controversial pension reform law and to express dissatisfaction with the head of state.

3,000 gendarmes and police mobilized

Kamel Brahmi told AFP that the inter-union would file an appeal before the administrative court upon notification of the banning order from the Paris police headquarters.

Emmanuel Macron has planned to attend, as is customary, the final of the French Football Cup which will oppose Nantes to Toulouse on Saturday evening. But, according to a source familiar with the matter, he will not descend on the lawn to greet the players before the start of the meeting.

Around the Stade de France, 3,000 police and gendarmes will be mobilized.

In his banning order, the prefect of police of Paris, Laurent Nuñez argues that “the gathering” which was declared “within a deadline in violation of the legal requirement”, will be held “at the same times and in the same places of arrival by public transport of supporters”.

He explains that “given the very large number of supporters having to use these transports, estimated at more than 70,000 people, and the serious problems of crowd management induced”, this gathering “can only expose people to risks for their safety, particularly in the event of crowd movement”.

The prefect also notes that by wanting to distribute red cards and whistles to be used at the Stade de France “due to the presence of the President of the Republic”, the organizers “intend to import, inside the stadium and during the match, their protest demonstration by encouraging supporters to support their cause, in disregard of all sportsmanship”.

“Such a project is incompatible with the final destination of the Stade de France,” adds Laurent Nuñez, assuring that groups of supporters “have announced that they are opposed to any form of politicization of the match”.

In his decree, the prefect recalls that “all types of musical instruments, fog horns (…) are prohibited by the internal regulations of the French Football Federation (…) when meetings are organized by this federation “.
