Los general secretaries of the UGT and Workers’ Commissions (CC OO), Pepe Álvarez and Unai Sordothey have urged the CEOE employers to close a salary agreement this May Day or otherwise, they have warned, there will be strikes and mobilizations.

“Either there is a wage agreement or the unions will organize, not call, mobilization days in the autumn,” warned the general secretary of CC OO, at the press conference prior to the May Day demonstration.

Sordo has advanced that these mobilizations, of a general nature, “will take the form of a strike” in those sectors with “blocked” collective agreements.

“The CEOE has to know that time is shortening; either there is an agreement or there will be a conflict,” Álvarez has warned, adding that the conflict “we know how it starts, but not how it ends”.

Likewise, the UGE leader has insisted that this May Day must serve to “consolidate achievements such as the labor or pension reform.”

“CEOE has to decide if it wants an agile collective bargaining, with significant salary increases (…) or if it prefers to do it from the conflict,” Sordo has settled, while Álvarez has pointed out that if the employers value social peace, they must be aware that this “requires an effort” on the business side.

Under the motto “Raise salaries, lower prices, distribute benefits”, the UGT and CC OO have put at the center this year the need to increase salaries in the face of a price escalation after which they point out “to excess corporate profits”.

The demonstration in Madrid started a few minutes after 12:00 pm led by Unai Sordo and Pepe Álvarez, as well as the general secretaries of Madrid, Paloma López and Marina Prieto. Four ministers attend the demonstration in Madrid: the Second Vice President of the Government and Minister of Labor and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz; the Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero; the Minister of Consumption, Alberto Garzón, and the Minister of Equality, Irene Montero. Díaz and Garzón repeat for the second consecutive year in the march in Madrid, which runs between Gran Vía and Plaza de España.

Labor Minister

The Minister of Labor has asked the CEOE employers to close an agreement with the unions this month to raise wages. At a press conference before the demonstration in Madrid, Díaz called on the employers to close a new agreement with the unions “immediately, imminently” to serve as a guide in wage negotiations. “It is essential that he do it, that he live up to it,” added Díaz, who has called for participation in this Labor Day.

Diaz has pointed to the need for amend the Basic Statute of Public Employees to put an end to temporary employment in the public sector that has been labeled as “indecent.” “It is possible, what we did in private companies can and should be done in public,” he has settled.

Likewise, it has advanced that an expert report on the law of time uses will be presented shortly and has insisted on the need to reduce the working day without reducing wages.
