The United Nations has condemned the government’s crackdown on recent clashes. At the same time, the organization called on the government to respect international human rights standards.

In a statement on Thursday (July 25), UN human rights chief Volker Turk said these things.

The statement called for the release of details on the crackdown on protests and violence, and urged the United Nations to ensure that law enforcement actions comply with international human rights standards.

Volker Turk said that according to the latest information, more than 170 people have been killed and more than 1,000 injured in student protests and youth movements against the government’s policy on job quotas. Many of whom have been denied the right to medical treatment. At least two journalists were killed. Many were seriously injured. Thousands of people including opposition leaders have been arrested.

He also said that a conducive environment for dialogue should be created to stop violence. My appeal to the government is that law enforcement agencies must follow international human rights principles and standards in controlling protests and using force.

He urged the government to launch internet in Bangladesh in light of international law. He said that people are not able to know about the activities of the law enforcement forces due to the internet being closed. Due to this, the fear of impunity for their actions is increasing.

Volker Turk said that the government must provide detailed information about the dead-injured and detained persons.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights called for assurances that such incidents do not recur and that no retaliatory measures are taken against those involved in the protests.
