The UN mission in Libya conducted an online survey, to understand how the United Nations can better support women’s voices in the political process.

According to the study in which 63 people, both men and women, participated, a third of the participants stated that, given that women represent half of society, ensuring their inclusion in the decision-making process would improve not only the political situation, but also the economic situation, the effects of which were in many cases. It is more common for women than for others.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya stated in a post on its official website that many participants stressed that the inclusion of women allows diverse viewpoints to be heard on key issues, leading to more comprehensive decision-making and innovative policy development.

A 55-year-old woman from Tripoli said: “Women play a role in spreading peace and raising the standard of living, especially when they are in leadership positions.”

Others added that participation in the political process through voting and running for elections can contribute to enhancing the role of women in political decision-making and enabling them to have equal opportunities in formulating government policies.

A young Libyan woman added, “As a 23-year-old Amazigh woman from Zuwara, I have benefited greatly from the training courses offered by many organizations. Future training for women should focus on achieving access to political life, and include practical and applied aspects such as visiting ministries and parliament, and communicating with local leaders.”

All survey participants would like to see more support from the United Nations in Libya for women. They recommended ensuring an inclusive process in which all women from different communities across Libya can participate, including calling for a quota for women in state institutions.

They also called for encouraging the adoption of laws and policies that protect women’s rights, promote equality, and protect women and girls from violence, especially on social media.

Participants pointed out the need to enhance communication and advocacy skills among women, especially young women, to increase their level of participation in the political process and their ability to communicate, and to design and implement projects and programs aimed at protecting women’s rights and supporting women’s development, including providing practical training with visits to parliament and councils, as well as Participation and dialogue with local leaders to help make women’s voices heard, and holding workshops at the level of universities, higher institutions and schools to raise awareness of women’s rights.
