A UN technical expert team will arrive in Dhaka next Thursday (August 22) to investigate the killing of protesters during the student-crowd movement. They will primarily do research. In the meantime, the interim government has assured all kinds of cooperation to this investigation team.

Foreign Secretary Masood bin Momen informed this information on Wednesday (August 21).

A three-member delegation from the UN Geneva Mission will arrive in Dhaka on Thursday. After the visit of the technical expert team, the United Nations Fact Finding Mission will come to Dhaka later. That team will ultimately investigate the murder. The technical expert team will ultimately develop a framework for the investigation. Later the Fact Finding Mission will do the final investigation.

Foreign Affairs Advisor M Tauhid Hossain said in this regard that the interim government is ready to assist the United Nations in investigating the casualties in the movement. What the government wants is an impartial investigation. The position of this government is very clear and transparent. Those who committed and ordered these crimes must be brought to justice. We have a principled decision to let the United Nations help in this work.

Gwen Lewis, UN resident coordinator in Dhaka, said that the UN technical expert team will come and do the preliminary investigation. What will be their mandate (politics), how they will work with the government, will be further discussed. The delegation will finalize the preliminary investigation work by discussing various issues including their terms of reference (scope of work), working time limit.

According to the United Nations, more than 630 students died during the anti-discrimination student movement. The UN will conduct an impartial investigation into the deaths of these people.
