The United Nations expressed its concern about reports of the use of “heavy weapons” in the fighting in the Sudanese city of El Fasher.”

The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkwita Salami, said: “Civilians were injured and were transferred to El Fasher Hospital, while other civilians found themselves caught in the middle of violent battles while they were trying to flee the city located in the Darfur region.”

Salami added in a statement on the “X” platform: “The use of heavy weapons and launching attacks in densely populated areas in the center of El Fasher and its surroundings are causing many casualties,” calling on “all parties to spare the city from fighting.”

The UN official stressed that “these acts of violence threaten the lives of more than 800,000 people living in the city.”

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, expressed his “deep concern about the ongoing war in Sudan,” and said: “We need an urgent ceasefire and a coordinated international effort to achieve a political process that can put the country back on the right track.”

The war broke out in Sudan on April 15, 2023, between the army led by Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo.

El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, is a major aid center in the region located in western Sudan, where a quarter of the country’s 48 million people live.
