The United States Supreme Court issued a ruling today legalizing gay marriage nationwide and declaring that denying such licenses to same-sex couples violates the constitution.

The unprecedented decision produces a significant change in the country’s history, comparable only to the repeal of restrictions on interracial marriages repealed in the 1960s.

This is not the first time that the highest court has ruled on the matter, since in recent months several rulings were issued to revoke marriage bans in states that did not allow such marriages.

On the other hand, public opinion has experienced an important change in its perception of homosexual unions, since according to Gallup approval went from 27% in 1996 to 60% in May 2015.

36 of the 50 states currently allowed gay unions, so this verdict will eliminate the ban that existed in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee and Texas.
