In an official statement, US Secretary of State, Antony Blinkensaid the opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia won the recent presidential election in VenezuelaAccording to Blinken, the “overwhelming evidence” confirms that González Urrutia obtained the majority of votes in the electoral process of July 28.
“Given the overwhelming evidence, it is clear to the United States and, more importantly, to the Venezuelan people, that Edmundo González Urrutia won the majority of votes in Venezuela’s July 28 presidential election,” Blinken said in a statement.

For his part, the president Nicolas Madurowho was proclaimed the winner of the elections by the National Electoral Council (CNE) With 51% of the votes, he proposed resuming negotiations with the United States.
However, Maduro conditioned any contact on the “respectful” disposition of Washington to comply with a memorandum of understanding signed last September in Qatar.
This agreement, in parallel with the talks in Barbados between Chavismo and the opposition, foresees the reactivation of the relations once the electoral disputes are resolved.
Maduro also posted on social network X a call for dialoguehighlighting that any possible conversation must be based on respect for the Venezuelan sovereignty and the suspension of threats.

Despite Maduro’s official proclamation, the Venezuelan opposition and several international observers have expressed serious doubts about the transparency of the elections. The opposition claims to have copies of more than 80% of the electoral records and claims that González Urrutia obtained 67% of the votes. The accusations of fraud have unleashed protests in the countrywhich have resulted in at least 11 deaths and a thousand arrests, according to human rights organizations.
