László György said that the program was inspired by national statistics, according to which 54 percent of children living in small settlements far from work and further education opportunities do not acquire a profession or graduate from high school.

Until the age of 14, children do not, or only rarely, leave their settlement. Therefore, going to secondary school and the accompanying change of community is an ordeal for them, it can be said to traumatize them

– detailed the government commissioner.

In the framework of the program, university mentors help the young students by their own example and by providing experiences outside the small settlement, by visiting museums, vocational training centers, and companies. The goal is that by 2030, all current elementary school students in Hungary will have at least a profession, then find a job on the labor market and be able to support themselves and their families.

In the afternoon, the government commissioner ceremoniously handed over 7 minibuses to the University of Szeged for the purpose of helping the mentoring work. László György said that they helped four domestic universities with vehicles, of which SZTE received the most.

Since the sixth semester, 2021, the University of Szeged has participated in the national program with one of the largest number of students among the country’s universities. During this time, 450 mentors mentored more than 1,200 elementary school students in the small towns of the region.
