iPhone, iPad, iMac, iPod… There are many devices billed by Apple throughout their history that have incorporated, right at the beginning of their names, the letter ‘i’. Possibly, if you know the history of the company, especially regarding the creation of its first mobile, you get a slight idea.
For Steve Jobs, co-founder of the company and one of the great technological gurus of history, to be ahead, to be imaginative, was practically an obsession. At the time of the presentation of the iPhoneIn 2007, the executive stated that, deep down, the mobile phones that had been manufactured up to then were not very intelligent. His terminal was intended to be a turning point, especially when it comes to Internet use.
And it is that, precisely, ‘Internet‘, according to the media, is one of the words related to the ‘i’ that Apple devices incorporate. Nevertheless, is not the only one.
These five words come from the launch of the iMac computer in 1998. This was made clear, in an interview with ‘The New York Times’, by Ken Segall, the man behind Apple’s ‘Think different’ advertising campaign and who also worked on the team to name the new company computer.
Specifically, Segall stated that the name occurred to him, and that the ‘i’ in front of iMacin addition to the Internet, meant ‘imagination‘ e ‘individual‘. At first, Steve Jobs hated the name for the computer, however, as the days went by, he backed down and ended up convinced when he saw the serigraphy on a model of the computer.
“There was never a phone call from Steve saying, you guys really are geniuses. It was just silence, and suddenly it was iMac, which was great,” Segall concluded.
Indeed, the Internet could hardly be the only meaning of the ‘i’ in Apple products and even in its mobile and tablet operating systems, such as iOS y iPadOS. And it is that the ‘i’ can also be found in devices such as the iPod music player, which were never known for their ability to surf the Web.
