A UN ‘fact-finding team’ is investigating the casualties during the student protests in July and August.

The team will start working from Saturday (September 14).

This UN team has come to Bangladesh at the invitation of the interim government and the government will give them full cooperation.

It is known that more than 800 people were killed and more than 1000 people were injured during the student movement.

Law enforcement forces and Awami League-backed forces have tortured ordinary people. Even children in the house lost their lives in the firing. Around 50 members of law enforcement were killed and various government and private institutions were burnt.

A senior official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that today they will start their work through a meeting with the foreign adviser or the foreign secretary.

The UN delegation will consist of a technical team, consisting of forensic, legal and other experts. The official said, this is the first experience for Bangladesh, so we have to work very carefully.

According to the mandate of the UN team, they will investigate human rights violations that occurred between July 1 and August 15. They will review the root causes of these incidents and make recommendations on what long-term steps can be taken to ensure justice and accountability.

In the last week of August, the UN vanguard team arrived in Dhaka and held meetings with members of the Interim Government Advisory Council, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Law, Ministry of Home Affairs, students, civil society, media and other parties. The meetings discussed the needs of the people of Bangladesh, human rights violations and the investigation process. Civil society, truth disclosure, reparations and reconciliation of social differences were also discussed.
