Hundreds of lawyers have mobilized in recent weeks in dozens of cities demanding be able to access decent pensions when, after decades of work, it is time for them to hang up their robes. What is an understandable claim hides a bitter conflict that involves thousands of lawyers who, at the time, entrusted their future pensions to a private entity, the Mutual Association of Lawyers. And years later they say they feel “deceived” after verifying that their benefits, in many cases, barely reach 300 or 400 euros per month, even below non-contributory pensions.

The Mutual Society defends that it has carried out transparent management of these assets and the income they would derive and affirms that these lawyers have lower pensions because, historically, their contributions have been low. Meanwhile, the eyes of those affected are directed to the public system, which they ask to be able to access through a kind of “gateway” that now allows them to take their savings to the common fund and, in this way, be able to access better benefits. It is a possibility that, at the moment, is not on the table. Sources from the Ministry of Inclusion and Social Security explain that, in any case, it should be addressed within the framework of the Toledo Pact, which is the parliamentary commission that addresses the issue of pensions.
