The supporters of Salikou SANOGO who were dismissed in their appeal by the Supreme Court decided, last Sunday, to create a new formation to definitively turn the page of the Union for the Republic and Democracy (URD) and not the ideals embodied by Soumaîla CISSE until his death.
Predictable. The division is consumed at the URD whose members and executives, dismissed in their appeal on points of law on April 12 by the Supreme Court, are preparing to throw in the towel. No collective resignation, these executives and activists of the URD have decided to create a new political formation.
“During this Sunday’s meeting, which lasted 5 hours, we decided to create a new political formation. We cannot stay in a party led by a president that we do not recognize, ”said a source of the meeting in which, according to her, members of the office took part.
“111 members of the URD office were present at the meeting out of some 200. This is proof that the majority wants the creation of this party”, indicated another member of the party in favor of Professor Salikou SANOGO.
According to him, their detractors had the favor of the court decision, but now they are at the head of an empty shell, arguing that most officials and activists are in favor of Salikou SANOGO against the predation of the party.
During last Sunday’s meeting, two commissions were set up, our sources indicate, to work on the creation of the new political formation which will embody the ideals and values of the late Soumaila Cissé, whose death on December 25, 2020, opened the problem of leadership within the URD.
“The party creation commission has 10 days to present its results. Its mission is to work on the logo, the headquarters and the name of the party and its texts, ”said our sources without further details on the launch of this party in the making which will be decided during its constituent general assembly.
“Things are not going to get out of hand because we are already working on this scenario long before the Supreme Court decision. It now remains to formalize them to move forward, ”say our sources.
The Awareness Commission, for its part, will be permanent and will soon be deployed on the ground as part of the establishment of the new party among the activists and executives who supported our struggle, added our source. But also to explain to grassroots activists the reasons for the creation of the new party.
The decision of the Supreme Court of Mali puts an end to the legal soap opera of more than a year between the heirs of the late Soumaila Cissé.
Indeed, for more than a year, the URD had been going through a period of turbulence because of a leadership problem which led to the holding of the 1st extraordinary congress of the party since its creation in 2003 by officials who considered that it is necessary to designate the successor of Soumaïla CISSE to put an end to the interim.
“More than ever the URD needs a new dynamic leader, proactive and capable of directing us, capable of restoring the party’s image, of restoring hope to militants and to Malians”, indicated Ms. COULIBALY Kadiatou SAMAKE, the one of the vice-presidents of the party and who was committed to the holding of the said congress.
On the other hand, the other camp led by Professor Salikou SAONGO considers this congress as a flagrant violation of the party’s texts.
“Those who are behind this congress are driven by the desire to take the party hostage by imposing a person as a candidate in the next presidential election,” said a very furious URD executive at the time. to see so many differences between party officials only a few months before the death of the founding president.
