Germany Sees Significant Increase in Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Augsburg doctors are warning of a significant increase in sexually transmitted diseases in Germany and are pushing for more education, including in schools. According to the President of the German Society for Sexual Health, Norbert Brockmeyer, sexually transmitted infections are on the rise in Germany.

In a statement to the “Augsburger Allgemeine”, Brockmeyer highlighted a tenfold increase in syphilis cases since the turn of the millennium. He noted that in 2000 there were around 800 syphilis infections, whereas today there are around 8,300 cases. Additionally, there has been an increase in other sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B and C, as well as herpes and HPV viruses.

Brockmeyer attributes this increase, among other things, to the fact that the Internet makes it easier to find quick sexual contacts, and many people mistakenly believe that protecting themselves from HIV is sufficient. As a result, he is calling for a lot more education about sexual health in schools.

In addition to increased education, Brockmeyer also stressed the need to expand vaccination against HPV. Currently, the vaccination rates for girls and boys in Germany are 60 percent and 25 percent, respectively, which he believes are too low to effectively protect the population. Brockmeyer pointed to Australia, where vaccination rates are much higher, and cervical cancer is expected to soon no longer occur.

The warning comes as a wake-up call for healthcare authorities in Germany as they grapple with the rising rate of sexually transmitted diseases. The calls for better education and expanded vaccination programs are being made to address this growing public health concern.]
