The International Olympic Committee (IOC) must formally condemn the mockery of Christianity during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games and take steps to ensure that it does not happen again.
As reported by Day.Az with reference to TASS, this is stated in a letter that more than 30 members of Congress sent to the head of the IOC, Thomas Bach.
During the opening ceremony of the Paris Games on July 26, a provocative parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” was shown. “We write to you in response to the vulgar mockery of the Christian faith demonstrated at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris 2024. The Games should unite people of all countries, races and faiths. There is no place for anti-Christian fanaticism at an event designed to unite the world. The Games should celebrate athletes, not insult anyone’s faith. We call on you to take immediate action and amend Rule 55 of the Olympic Charter to ensure that no religion is ever again the object of ridicule in the opening or closing ceremonies of the Games,” the American congressmen and senators emphasized. According to the Olympic Charter, no forms of political, religious or racial demonstrations are allowed at Olympic venues.
“The IOC must formally condemn the mockery of one of the most sacred episodes of the Christian faith that took place in Paris. The IOC must then make official changes to ensure that such a divisive demonstration does not happen again, so that the concept [основателя олимпийского движения Пьера де] Coubertin’s views on the Games continued to flourish. “Everyone, from any country, from any faith, should be able to enjoy the Olympic Games without being humiliated or ridiculed,” the lawmakers added.
