The American armed forces are currently not capable of waging a large-scale war, according to a report by a congressional commission presented to the Senate Armed Services Committee, Day.Az reports with reference to Interfax.

“The last time the country was prepared for such a conflict was during the Cold War, which ended 35 years ago,” the report says. “It is not prepared today.”

The document states that the US military “lacks both the capabilities and the potential to ensure that it can deter and prevail in combat operations.”

The commission said cooperation between Russia, China and other states increases the likelihood of conflict on multiple fronts, and the United States would be hard-pressed to resist such a war.

For more than a year, the commission’s former lawmakers, military leaders, and policy experts examined how well the U.S. military is implementing the 2022 National Defense Strategy. The group found large gaps between the Defense Department’s ambitions to deter or prevail in a major conflict and the reality. One reason they came to this conclusion is the current state of the U.S. defense industry compared to China’s.

“In a conflict with China, the United States would largely exhaust its munitions stockpiles in just three to four weeks, with some critical munitions (such as anti-ship missiles) running out in just days. Once expended, replacing these munitions would take years,” the report said.

Moreover, growing cooperation between the powers makes it almost inevitable that China and Russia will coordinate their actions against the United States in the event of an armed conflict with one or the other country, the document notes.

“The United States should assume that if it enters into a direct conflict involving Russia, China, Iran, or North Korea, each will receive economic and military assistance from the others. We also believe that this partnership increases the likelihood that a conflict with one of them will spread to multiple fronts, creating simultaneous demands on U.S. and allied resources,” the report says.
