US President Joe Biden said he would sign a bill aimed at banning TikTok in the country if the document is approved by Congress, Day.Az reports with reference to Interfax.
“If it is accepted, I will sign it,” NBC News quotes the American leader.
The bill to protect Americans from apps controlled by foreign attackers was sponsored by Wisconsin Republican Mike Gallagher and Illinois Democrat Raja Krishnamurthy.
The bill will force the Chinese company ByteDance (which owns the social network) to abandon the application for creating and viewing short videos TikTok, or the platform may be banned in the United States.
On Thursday, TikTok launched a lobbying campaign against the project, telling users that Congress was planning a complete ban on the app and urging them to contact lawmakers. One of the bill’s developers, Democrat Raja Krishnamurthy, said they were inundated with calls from children and teenagers.
“Little kids would call the office and ask questions like, ‘What is Congress?’ What is a congressman? Can I get my TikTok back?” the legislator said.
According to NBC, the bill was approved by the Energy and Commerce Committee on March 7. The lower house of the US Congress is expected to consider it next week. The document must also receive Senate approval before reaching Biden’s desk.
