The United States is opposed to the request of the Palestinian Authority to obtain the status of a full member of the United Nations, said a representative of the administration of President Joe Biden, quoted by Reuters.
The unnamed source spoke to the agency before the UN Security Council ruled on the matter today.
The draft resolution calls on the council to recommend to the UN General Assembly that “the State of Palestine be accepted as a member of the UN”, BTA reported.
For the measure to pass, it needs the support of 9 of the 15 members of the Security Council without any of the five permanent members vetoing it.
According to diplomats, the project is supported by 13 countries. This means that the United States will have to impose a veto, notes Reuters.
Such an outcome would be expected because the United States opposes the recognition of a Palestinian state, arguing that one must be established in accordance with an agreement with Israel.
The Security Council already discussed the Palestinian Authority’s request last week and promised to rule on the matter by the end of this month.
In September 2011, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas launched an initiative to “join the State of Palestine to the United Nations”, which, however, never materialized, France Press recalls. In the end, the Palestinian Authority received observer status in the world organization in November of the following year. Last week, it submitted a new request for full membership, citing the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip.
