Progress in the face of tensions: The US military announced this morning (Wednesday) that it carried out an airstrike in the Deir ez-Zor area in Syria, which was aimed at a series of facilities used by militias that are linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. According to them, this was in response to the rocket fire against US forces in August 15.

US military spokesman Colonel Joe Buccino said the purpose of the attack was to protect US forces from attacks by Iran-backed groups. According to him, US President Joe Biden approved the strikes – defined by him as “proportionate and deliberate actions, designed to limit the chance of escalation and reduce the risk of casualties”.

The current attack comes against the background of reports that talks are approaching to sign the nuclear agreement between Iran and the powers in recent days. Apparently, the US answer to the Iranian response to the “final proposal” for the EU agreement will be given today – and if the Americans agree, in the coming weeks talks will be held on the technical details of the agreement.

In the meantime, Israel is holding a series of meetings with senior American officials in order to prevent a return to the agreement with Iran. Tonight MLA head Eyal Hulta met with American National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, and later today Defense Minister Benny Gantz will take off for a diplomatic visit to Washington where he will hold meetings with Sullivan and other senior officials.

According to the White House statement, Sullivan emphasized in his meeting with Hulta President Biden’s firm commitment to “preserving and strengthening Israel’s capabilities to deter its enemies and defend itself with its own forces against any threat or combination of threats – including threats from Iran and forces supported by Iran.” He also reiterated the American commitment that Iran will never obtain nuclear weapons.
