NOTICIACRISTIANA.COM.- The North American government managed to free 135 political prisoners from Nicaragua. Among them are pastors and ministry leaders who are connected to a ministry based in the United States.

Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser, said they released the people for humanitarian reasons. He said: “No one should be imprisoned for the peaceful exercise of their fundamental rights of free expression, association and practice of their religion.”

They sent all the freed prisoners to nearby Guatemala, where they await asylum applications in the United States. Other political prisoners are still captives of the Nicaraguan regime.

“The United States once again counts on the government of Nicaragua to immediately end the arbitrary arrests of its citizens, simply for exercising their fundamental freedoms,” Sullivan added.

Quiet opponents in Nicaragua

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has campaigned for years to silence his opponents, or religious leaders he considers a threat.

He has exiled more than 300 opposition figures, rendering them stateless. The Ortega government fined or sentenced many others to long prison terms, and confiscated their assets.

Of the people released, eleven are pastors, who suffered persecution because of their work in the Ministry. And they are affiliated with Mountain Gateway, a religious organization based in Texas. Talk to Mountain Gateway CBN news about the good news in a recently published interview.

Christian ministers had received sentences ranging from 12 to 15 years and more than $80 million in fines per person.
