An air threat was reported throughout Israel, sirens sounded, and heavy explosions were heard over Jerusalem, as air defense systems shot down objects over the city, as we have already written about the beginning of the attack. At least 300 drones and missiles are reported to have been launched into Israel.
Israel says its and allied forces have shot down most of the drones and missiles fired by Iran. Iran’s unprecedented, retaliatory strike is the first time it has targeted Israel directly from its territory.
US President Joe Biden has told Israel that America’s support for the ally is ironclad, adding that the US has helped “shoot down almost every drone and missile fired at Israel.”
As a reminder, Israel has carried out numerous strikes on Iranian-backed targets in Syria, often targeting arms shipments allegedly destined for Hezbollah, Iran’s powerful proxy in Lebanon.
Israel has not claimed responsibility for the April 1 attack that destroyed the Iranian consulate building in the capital, Damascus.
But an Israel Defense Forces spokesman told CNN that their intelligence showed the building was not a consulate, but “a military building of the Quds Force disguised as a civilian building.”
