The use of telemedicine in the practice of legal abortion generates debate in Brazil – 04/03/2023 – Science and Health

Women and girls from Uberlândia (MG) who become pregnant after being raped have the option of undergoing multidisciplinary care and examinations at the Hospital das Clínicas. And once the possibility of medical abortion has been verified, they can carry out the procedure at home, with guidance via telemedicine.

The initiative, a pioneer in Brazil, is led by gynecologist Helena Paro, professor at the UFU (Federal University of Uberlândia) School of Medicine. According to the proposal, patients up to nine weeks pregnant receive pills to terminate the pregnancy and go home, where they receive treatment and are monitored online or by telephone by health professionals.

The project has generated confrontations. On the one hand, the WHO (World Health Organization) and Figo (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) argue that medical abortion at home is safe, surveys conducted in countries that authorize the practice confirm the effectiveness and safety of the method .

On the contrary, the CFM (Federal Council of Medicine) and the presidency of Febrasgo (Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Associations) affirm that legal abortion with guidance through telehealth can put patients at risk.
