The Utrecht Summer School, a partnership of Utrecht University, UMC Utrecht, Hogeschool Utrecht and Utrecht School of the Arts, is the largest summer school in Europe. 3000 students and professionals from all over the world participate in the 155 special summer courses every year.
From Humanities, Social Sciences and Art & Design to Business, Law and Economics and Life Sciences. The range of courses is wide, both in terms of levels and disciplines. Why attend summer school? From innovating and experimenting, eliminating a shortage of credits and scouting master’s, PhD students and postdocs to meeting nice people and gaining unforgettable experiences. It’s just who you ask.
Do real research in the lab
One of the crowd pullers is the ‘Biomedical Research Lab’ course by lecturer and professor Niels Bovenschen. As coordinator of education within the Faculty of Medicine at UMC Utrecht, he ensures the connection between biomedical research, care and education in everything, and focuses on socially relevant problems. In his summer course at the Bachelor Research Hub, he gives a group of international students a realistic look into the life of a biomedical researcher. A group of motivated students with different backgrounds will conduct real research into a current biomedical patient problem in the Bachelor Research Hub. In the upcoming edition, students will be looking for a new target for the treatment of cancer.
One you won’t soon forget
And the students? On average, the Utrecht Summer School – with a fully English-taught curriculum – attracts around 3,000 students from 120 different countries. They receive EC credits for participation in a number of these courses. But that is not the only reason for the popularity of the Utrecht Summer School. In addition to the academic programme, there are many social activities: getting to know the city of Utrecht, canoeing, parties on campus. And that makes it an unforgettable international experience for many. “I never thought I would get to know so many nice people. It also feels a bit like a vacation. One you won’t soon forget!”
