The value of Catalan fruit and vegetable exports has grew by 18% in the first semester despite falling by 2% in volume. As detailed on Monday by the Government in a statement, the latest available data show stable growth in the sector at the international level. In fact, Catalonia leads the production of apples in Spain and is the first producer of peaches and nectarines in Europe. “The companies in the fruit sector, after a few years with production impacts, are preparing for a particularly positive international campaign”, indicated the Executive, who this week will accompany the twenty companies and entities that will participate at the Fruit Attraction 2023 a Madrid.

“The fruit and garden sector is following the path of the agri-food sector as a whole in moving from volume to value: a bet has been made to influence the quality of the products, which improves the competitiveness of our companies”, recognizes the director of Prodeca, Ramon Sentmartí. “As a sector, we must maintain this strategy of competitiveness, profitability and internationalization in the long term, betting on sustainable and high-quality production that consolidates Catalonia’s position in the foreign market,” he concludes.

As Afrucat’s president, Montse Baró, also points out, it is not expected that the export capacity of Catalan companies be affected by the sustained decline in production recorded in recent years. “We fully trust in the loyalty of our customers towards the quality of Catalan fruit”, he points out. However, he points out that the sector is working to open new markets in Asia or Latin America.

As shown by Government data, in the last five years (2017-2022) the export of fruit decreased by 0.5% in total value taking into account that the volume has decreased by 24%. According to the Executive, these two crossed figures indicate that Catalan fruit is being claimed in international markets. As for fruit and vegetable exporting companies, in the last five years they have grown by almost 10%, going from 537 in 2017 to 589 companies in 2022.
