On September 4, Vanuatu’s National Assembly elected a former Prime Minister Sato Kilman as the country’s new Prime Minister to replace Ishmael Kalsakau after a legal dispute.

In a secret ballot in the National Assembly, Mr. Kilman, 65, received 27 votes to 23 in favor of Mr. Kalsakau.

Speaking in Parliament, Mr. Kilman said he would review foreign policy to bring more benefits to Vanuatu and would seek new export markets, while working to end the unrest in Vietnam. Vanuatu. This is the fifth time Mr. Kilman has been elected prime minister.

The last time he held this position was from June 2015 to February 2016.

Vanuatu fall into political instability since last August when opposition parties proposed a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Ishmael Kalsakau.

Mr Kalsakau failed to pass the vote of no confidence, but said it was unconstitutional. Vanuatu Supreme Court upheld the result vote of no confidence this and Mr. Kalsakau appealed.

However, the appeals court on September 4 rejected Kalsakau’s appeal, paving the way for the appointment of a new prime minister.
