Watching your favorite series on Netflix in the hotel and communicating with friends via Whatsapp – these wishes have a decisive influence on the booking of the holiday home, especially among younger generations.

Frankfurt am Main.

People in Germany also want to be able to use the Internet on vacation. In a representative YouGov survey on private internet use published on Saturday, which was commissioned by the internet service provider DE-CIX, 82 percent of those surveyed said that they were also online at their holiday destination. Only ten percent of people in Germany want to be completely offline when on vacation. Eight percent of those surveyed gave no information.

The use of the Internet differs greatly depending on the age group: Among the so-called Generation Z (aged 18 to 28 years), only four percent want to get by without a network connection on vacation, while among baby boomers (58 to 76 years) this figure rises to 17 percent. This age group uses e-mails particularly frequently as a communication channel (39 percent). Across all age groups, e-mail still accounts for 28 percent, while it no longer plays a major role for Generation Z at 11 percent.

Generation Z

Above all, the young generation wants to be online in order to be able to stream videos. 23 percent of those surveyed from Generation Z do not want to do without their favorite series via Netflix and Co. even when they are on holiday. Messengers such as WhatsApp, which are used by 45 percent of those surveyed, are even more popular across all age groups. This is followed by navigation apps with 38 percent and weather forecast applications (36 percent). In the baby boomer generation, almost every second respondent uses a weather app on vacation (46 percent).

The desire to be able to be online while on vacation also affects the criteria when booking a vacation trip: Almost two thirds (63 percent) of all survey participants expect free WiFi in their vacation home. A generally stable internet connection is important for 50 percent of those surveyed at the holiday destination. (dpa)
