These two small, odd-looking fish are titans in more ways than one. They belong to the species Pseudoliparis swirei, known by popular names as snailfish and which is capable of living in oceanic abysses. This species is the vertebrate that lives deepest underwater. Fish of this species have been seen more than six kilometers deep in the sea, where complete darkness reigns and the pressure is enormous. Recently, a team including Wenjie Xu and Kun Wang from Northwest Polytechnic University in Xi’an, China, as well as Shunping He from the Institute of Deep Sea Science and Engineering under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, have carried out a genetic analysis of this amazing animal. The results reveal how evolution has managed to forge some of the capabilities that allow it to live at such depth. (Source: NCYT from Amazings)
