The volume of mortgage debt of Russians exceeded 10 trillion rubles

The volume of debt of Russians on mortgage loans by May 1 of this year for the first time in history exceeded 10 trillion rubles, follows from the materials of the Bank of Russia.

Compared to the previous month, the indicator increased by more than 280 billion rubles, or 2.9%. The annual growth was 25.8%.

In general, in April, the Russians took out 191,420 mortgage loans in the amount of 550.9 billion rubles. This number is 153% more than a year earlier. Last April, against the backdrop of the coronavirus and severe restrictive measures, the population issued only 97,453 loans for 217.8 billion rubles.

The weighted average mortgage rate in Russia by May 1 was 7.3%. This is the highest figure in the last four months.

At the same time, the volume of overdue mortgage debt in Russia decreased over the month. It amounted to 69.7 billion rubles, or 0.7% of the total. A month earlier, it was at the level of 71 billion rubles.

The previous threshold was RUB 9 trillion. the indicator surpassed by the beginning of 2021. So, as of January 1, the volume of debt amounted to 9.08 trillion rubles.

Yesterday, the Central Bank reported that by April 1 of this year, the level of the debt burden of Russians has renewed its historical maximum, reaching 11.9%. By the same date in 2020, the figure was 10.9% and at that time was a record. The regulator explained that the main reason for the growth of this value lies in the fast pace of consumer lending, which is disproportionate to how the income of the population is increasing.
