The war splits the Five Stars: Di Maio becomes self-employed

by time news

Arms deliveries to Kyiv split the largest governing party, and Foreign Minister Di Maio founded his own group. Draghi’s coalition is getting into more and more trouble.

The Ukraine war is causing severe turbulence in Rome: not only is the conflict causing Mario Draghi’s government to falter more and more. His pro-Ukraine course is also blowing up the strongest force in parliament, the Five Star Movement: its former boss and current foreign minister, Luigi Di Maio, wants to go his own way. Apparently he is already collecting signatures for a new faction. He already has the name for his new group: “Together for the future”.

“Today is a difficult decision that I never thought I would have to make … but today I and many other colleagues and friends are leaving the Five Star Movement,” Di Maio said at a news conference Tuesday night.
