The Chief Prosecutor’s Office of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County has charged the man and woman whose two-year-old child was hit by a wardrobe for the offense of serious bodily injury committed through negligence causing a danger to life.

According to information from the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Prosecutor’s Office, the couple lived in a sublet in Borsod with their three minor children. Last July, they bought a two-part hall cabinet made of laminated chipboard.

The man placed the two-shelf upper part of the furniture on the three pegs in the lower part of the cabinet, and then leaned it against the wall in the living room. The parents were aware that the dowels only prevent the upper part from sliding, and for stable and safe use, the back of the upper part should also have been fixed to the wall, which they failed to do.

One day in July, the family was at home, the woman was changing clothes in the washing machine, while the man was in the room with the three children. The two-year-old child escaped from his parents’ supervision for a few minutes and climbed onto the lower part of the closet.

With this, he dislodged the upper part of the furniture shelf, then pulled it onto himself and fell backwards. The mother noticed the accident and lifted the cupboard off the child’s chest, then together with her husband, they immediately took care of the little one’s medical care.

The child suffered indirectly life-threatening injuries. The prosecutor’s office requested a suspended prison sentence for the parents of the little one.
