The public is happy that the water from the Vaigai River, which was opened for the Chithrai festival, arrived in Madurai a day earlier.

It is customary to open the water of the Vaigai River every year during the Kallaghar Landing Ceremony at Vaigai. For the last 2 years, due to corona control, the Vaigai River landing event has not taken place.
Thus intensive arrangements are being made to hold the Kallazhagar Vaigai River Descent this year with the usual enthusiasm. Roads have been repaired and a pavilion is being set up at the Vaigai River landing near the avi flyover. The area is being rehabilitated to accommodate a large number of devotees.
In this situation, water was opened from the Vaigai dam yesterday for the festival. Usually in summer the water released from the dam usually reaches Madurai after 3 days. But due to the widespread rains in the last few days, the water in the Vaigai River which reached Madurai two days ago came to Madurai this morning.
The public was delighted to see the water receding. Devotees greeted the Vaigai water with joy by playing the Mangala instrument at the descent of the river Vaigai.
216 million cubic feet of water is being released from the dam. Currently 114 million cubic feet of water has been released and arrangements have been made to open the remaining water for five more days.
