FT warns of possibility of facing ‘either/or’ security strategy between US, EU and Korea
“Just because North Korea is poor doesn’t mean it is underdeveloped in all aspects.”
“Developing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles without considering welfare at all”
A voice of self-reflection emerged through the Financial Times (FT) on the 28th (local time), saying that the West had ridiculed North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un and underestimated the capabilities of the regime, and now faces a threat from North Korea.
Regarding North Korea’s decision to send troops to the Russian battlefield in the war with Ukraine, Gideon Rahman, a senior diplomatic commentator at the FT, said in an article, “Western analysis has continued to underestimate the radicalism and aggressiveness of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chairman Kim.” pinched
Rahman predicted that the United States, the European Union (EU), and South Korea could be faced with the choice of either assuming the defeat of Ukraine and devising a response strategy that takes into account the reorganized security environment, or supporting Ukraine against hostile forces, including Russia.
“There is an unfortunate tendency in the West to treat North Korea like a joke,” he said. “Treating the Kim Jong-un regime as a joke is a serious underestimation of the capabilities of the North Korean regime. North Korea’s poverty does not mean that the North Korean regime is slow to develop in all respects. Rather, it proves that the welfare of ordinary people is not considered at all for military development,” he pointed out.
He continued, “The North Korean regime has succeeded in developing nuclear weapons in an isolated situation, something that even richer and more connected countries such as Iran and Syria have not been able to achieve. “North Korea has also developed ballistic missiles and significant offensive cyber capabilities,” he said. “Chairman Kim has already delivered millions of artillery shells to Russia. Because of this, the Putin regime gained the upper hand in the artillery war with Ukraine. “Now it appears that the North Korean military is ready to jump into battle,” he said.
Although it is expected that the deployment of approximately 10,000 North Korean troops to the Ukrainian front will be difficult to significantly change the situation of the war, it is analyzed that it may be helpful to Russia’s strategy of launching an offensive at the risk of great losses based on its military superiority.
At the same time, while recalling North Korea’s current tendency to limit its intention to dispatch troops to technology transfer and economic benefits to Russia, it left open the possibility that the deployment of troops was a measure taken in anticipation of repayment in future conflicts on the Korean Peninsula.
In addition, it was highlighted that North Korea continued to radicalize its policies this year while international interest in North Korea dropped significantly after former U.S. President Donald Trump failed to reach an agreement with Chairman Kim at the North Korea-US summit in 2019 when he was in power.
Russia and North Korea signed the ‘Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (North Korea-Russia Treaty)’, which is equivalent to a military alliance, and decided to provide immediate military support to each other in case of emergency. They made harsh remarks toward the South and even blew up the inter-Korean road. That is the signal.
Against this backdrop, the possibility was raised that he might believe in the long-term decline of the United States, similar to the views held by Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Putin. This means that they may be seeing the reorganization of the world order that President Xi has been mentioning as an opportunity.
