The United States condemns the law adopted in Russia criminalizing the dissemination of fakes about the actions of the Russian Armed Forces. This is stated in a statement by the official representative of the National Security Council (NSC) of the White House, Emily Horn.
The Joe Biden administration “condemns the decision of the Federation Council to pass a law that threatens journalists and ordinary citizens with up to 15 years in prison” for “false” information about the Russian military operation in Ukraine. The White House also condemns the closure of independent media and technology platforms in Russia.
On March 4, President Vladimir Putin signed a law that introduces criminal penalties (up to a maximum of 15 years in prison) for disseminating false information about the actions of the Russian armed forces. The law was adopted in one day against the background of the Russian military operation in Ukraine. Because of this, a number of foreign media have suspended their activities in Russia. Some Russian media have decided not to cover events related to the military operation.
