He showed up at the check-point of Vilok on the border with Hungary among the crowd of Ukrainian refugees. Accompanied by her mother and some of her bodyguards, she had six suitcases with her with which she tried to cross the border crossing. The suspicions of the customs staff are unavoidable. And from a check they are $ 28 million in cash popped up in addition to 1.3 million euros. Anastasia Kotvitska, model by profession, was thus subjected to arrest. And what at first glance appeared to be a refugee fleeing the war was none other than that the wife of former MP Igor Kotvitsky, 52, a member of the Popular Front and listed as one of the richest deputies in Ukraine. The money was seized and a criminal case was opened against the woman – who justified the sum with the need to be assisted for the birth.
The news of Anastasia Kotvitska’s arrest was reported by the Ukrainian newspaper Obozrevatel. Her husband, who has been at the helm of the nuclear system for years and would have shares in the country’s uranium companies, denied the news of his wife’s flight and confirmed that she was crossing the border because she was pregnant and had to give birth: All my money is in Ukrainian banks, I did not withdraw anything, the former parliamentarian would have declared. But the report of Anastasia Kotvitska’s arrest immediately bounced back in the international media and caused a sensation, also in the light of the continuous complaints of members of the Ukrainian elite who try to take their capital abroad by avoiding border controls.
