The Wiggles Address Controversy Over Video Featuring Drug Reference

The beloved children’s entertainment group, The Wiggles, are facing renewed scrutiny following the circulation of a video featuring a song with explicit references to drug use. The incident comes months after the group navigated legal challenges and accusations of financial misconduct, raising questions about brand control and association.
The controversy centers around a now-deleted clip promoting “Ecstasy,” a new song by Keli Holiday, the solo project of Adam Hyde of Peking Duk. The video featured Anthony Field, the “Blue Wiggle,” and his nephew, Dominic Field, who performs as “The Tree of Wisdom.” The song’s chorus includes the lyrics, “Hey girl come on dance with me/ You and your pocket full of ecstasy.”
The promotional video surfaced shortly after The Wiggles shared the stage with Holiday at the TikTok Awards on Wednesday, November 26, for a performance of his single “Dancing2.” This collaboration has prompted concerns from parents and industry professionals, given the group’s core audience of young children.
A spokesperson for The Wiggles released a statement addressing the situation, emphasizing the group’s stance against drug use. “We understand that a video circulating on social media has caused concern for many parents and professionals, and we want to address that directly,” the statement read. “While Keli Holiday is a friend of The Wiggles, the video and the music added to it were created independently and without our knowledge.”
Maintaining Brand Safety Amidst External Collaborations
The Wiggles were previously embroiled in controversy earlier this year when the group was sued by a former CEO and allegations of financial misconduct were leveled against Anthony Field. This latest incident underscores the challenges faced by established brands when collaborating with external artists. The group maintains that they were unaware of the lyrical content added to the video and that it does not reflect their values.
“We deeply value the confidence families place in us and we remain committed to creating safe, positive, and educational experiences for children and families in Australia and around the world,” the spokesperson concluded. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of rigorous vetting processes and clear contractual agreements when engaging in partnerships, particularly within the entertainment industry.
