Xavier Giannoli’s “Lost Illusions” won seven Caesars, including Best Film, “Annette” by Leos Carax won Best Director and four awards. Best actress and best actor: Valérie Lemercier (“Aline”) and Benoît Magimel (“In his lifetime”).
On the stage of the Olympia in Paris, the Academy of Caesars presented its awards to French cinema. The 4,300 voters – representatives of various trades in the industry, from technicians to producers, actors, filmmakers, agents, exhibitors… – decided on the merits of three favourites: lost illusions by Xavier Giannoli, an adaptation of Balzac whose fifteen nominations constituted a historic record; the english language musical film Annette by Leos Carax, quoted eleven times; and Aline by Valérie Lemercier, Celine Dion biopic nominated in ten categories.
With the return of Antoine de Caunes as master of ceremonies for the tenth time, this 47th edition saw Cate Blanchett celebrated with an honorary Caesar presented by Isabelle Huppert, and a very special tribute was paid by Xavier Dolan to Gaspard Ulliel , who died accidentally in January, aged 37. An evening that Canal+ clearly wanted to be more polished and under control than the previous two years, punctuated by a whole host of events not recorded on the teleprompter. These are the only things likely to break with an ultra-honed awards ceremony, traditionally devoid of stunts and major twists…
