This year, winter recorded the highest average temperatures in history in 10 of the 25 capitals of the country where it is possible to make measurements from the Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology) stations.

The analysis of Sheet shows that the ten cities (Cuiabá, Manaus, Boa Vista, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Branco, Macapá, Belém, João Pessoa and Maceió) presented temperatures 0.5°C to 3.4°C higher than in the first decade of the century.

Climate authorities consider the 3°C increase in average, not maximum, temperature in a short period of time to be worrying.

The study used the oldest information from each station. There are capitals where measurements have been made since 1961. Recife and Porto Velho were excluded because local facilities did not record winter data or collected it in a few days.

For experts, 2023 represents another year in the growing trend of climate change.

“The combination of El Niño and global warming leads us to new records of changes in the climate pattern. They will be increasingly frequent anywhere on the planet,” says meteorologist Danielle Barros Ferreira, from Inmet.
