The We Care Foundation brings to theaters the work that has registered 4 million views in 220 countries in a week. Present the authors Maurizio and Zaya Benazzo: Four years of work together with the doctor who changed the perspective on trauma

One in five Americans is diagnosed with mental illness. And, also in the United States, suicide is the second most common cause of death among 15-24 year olds. Over 800,000 people a year globally, to be precise; 48,300 in the States alone. But equally alarming are the data relating to drug overdose, which in the US kills 81,000 a year. It is impossible to understand addiction without asking what relief the addict finds, or hopes to find, in drugs or addictive behavior. According to Gabor Mat, Canadian psychotherapist (he worked for 12 years in the Downtown East Side of Vancouver with drug addiction and mental illness patients) and world-famous bestselling author (Hubert Evans award for non-fiction, but also Honorary degree law from Northern British Columbia and the Martin Luther King Award against mothers’ violence towards teenagers). Now, his film The wisdom of trauma (literally The wisdom of trauma) arrives in Milan at Cinema Anteo thanks to the We Care Foundation which Tuesday 27 July, at 8.30 pm, presents the Italian preview with the participation of the authors and directors Maurizio and Zaya Benazzo, present in the room.

A new vision of the company

An extraordinary film starring Mat himself and which in just two weeks has recorded more than 4 million views in 220 countries. We travel with the doctor who has dedicated his life to understanding the connection between disease, addiction, trauma and society to discover a new vision on trauma, the invisible force that affects our lives. Dr. Mat offers us a new vision: a trauma-aware society, in which parents, teachers, doctors, politicians and legal staff do not bother to correct behaviors, make diagnoses, remove symptoms or judge, but seek the roots that give life to problematic behaviors and diseases in the wounded human soul. With this film – explains Maurizio Benazzo – we hope to touch many people, start a conversation and promote a common understanding on how trauma impacts our individual lives, the community and society as a whole.

Four years to carry out the project

It took four years of work to finish the film, shot in Canada, Vancouver, San Francisco and North California. The covid prevented the project from finishing according to original plans, but forced the director to be creative and introduce animation, a key element in The Wisdom of Trauma. Says the director: The characters appeared as if by magic at the right time and in the right place and, four years after the start of shooting, the success of the film was something we did not expect. More than 4 million people watched the film around the world in the week of the premire. The idea? It was born 15 years ago when with my partner Zaya we went to India to shoot a film about NIsargadatta Maharaji (Rays of the Absolute, free on YouTube) and gave rise to the idea of organizing a conference that combines science and spirituality. Thus was born SAND (science and nonduality) a non-profit association that brought together luminaries of science and spiritual masters of all traditions on what it means to be “human” beyond dogmas and doctrines with live events in the USA and ( some) in Europe. Gabor attended one of our events five years ago. As soon as I met him I decided to make a film about him.
